In a season often described as unpredictable, the four teams expected to be the best of the National League are, of all things, the best of the National League. You could look at the quartet and believe that the gap between it and everyone else only will widen after the All-Star break. If you do, the second wild card spot essentially will come down to the Cubs, Mets and Giants. In that scenario, the Mets have perhaps a one-in-three chance to be the road team in the single-elimination wild card game.
Or do the Mets view the Nationals as vulnerable? Do they see an NL East leader still dealing with multiple key injuries plus possibly lacking something in its roster DNA to fully capitalize on its talent? The Mets have destiny in their hands — 12 of their final 70 games are against Washington.
Do the Mets believe, falling short of a division crown, the next prize is valuable because the Royals and Giants were wild cards who went to the World Series last year — and San Francisco won it all after starting as the road team in the one-and-done wild card game?
I suspect most Mets fans would sign up today for the one-game playoff and take their win-or-go-home chances with Jacob deGrom or Matt Harvey or Noah Syndergaard. Despite all the injuries and lack of offense and negativity, they rebounded on a West Coast trip through Los Angeles and San Francisco that was supposed to doom them and won seven of nine to finish the first half.
With that surge, they drew within two games of the Nationals and one of the Cubs for the second wild card spot. The Mets hierarchy essentially asked Terry Collins — his job obviously on the line — and the team to keep it together. They did, lobbing the onus back toward ownership and Alderson to honor their commitment, mainly to not let playoff opportunity and this terrific rotation go to waste.
But he is a corner outfielder. That would mean putting Michael Cuddyer with whom the Mets are contracted through next season on the bench because I have yet to hear a Mets official who believes Curtis Granderson could competently defend in center for an extended period.
And it is a problem that keeps on giving because Bruce, Cuddyer and Granderson are all signed at least through next year. Also, the Mets do not know when David Wright is returning and in what condition.
He would play second base now and — if Wright returns — can move around if Daniel Murphy were moved back to second.
